About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been practiced for thousands of years in Asia. It involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body known as acupoints or meridian points. These points are believed to be located along pathways called meridians through which the body’s vital energy, called Qi (pronounced “chee”), flows.
According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, illness and pain occur when the flow of Qi along these meridians is blocked or unbalanced. Acupuncture aims to restore the proper flow of Qi by stimulating specific acupoints, thereby promoting healing and relieving symptoms.
Acupuncture stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, or trigger the release of neurotransmitters that modulate pain perception. Other studies that acupuncture may affect the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
Research into acupuncture has shown promising results for a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, headaches, nausea and vomiting, and osteoarthritis, among others. However, more high-quality studies are needed to fully understand its efficacy and mechanisms of action.
